"are they real?" patient profile december 2004.

M.J. is a 24 year old woman who had breast augmentation surgery August 2004.

What do you do? I'm a flight attendant for <name withheld> All my friends went to college and I wanted to see the world. Instead I saw Omaha, Kansas City and Manchester, New Hampshire. Well, that was just for the first few years. I'm currently doing nonstops between Chicago and Ft. Lauderdale/ Hollywood, which is fun because overnights are in Miami.

When did you first feel breast augmentation may be an option for you? I was the youngest of four sisters. They were all natural C cups or D cups. I was an A and just kept waiting to take after my sisters, but it never happened. My mom's a B and I couldn't even get that far on my own! And then it hit me when one of my friends got them done right after high school graduation. She was always open with me about wanting to get the surgery, but I just didn't know how serious she was. She saved money from baby sitting and tutoring for who knows how long, without telling anybody. And then we got together for coffee, like 2 months after graduation, and boom! There they were. I couldn't take my eyes off them. I must have spent the whole time talking to her chest. That's when I knew I wanted them done for sure.

How did you pick your surgeon? What qualities were important to you? That was so easy. I asked my friend who her surgeon was and she told me. I set up a consultation with <name withheld>, and he explained everything clearly to me, and when I say "he," I mean "HE." Not a nurse or an assistant. And then I still wasn't sure, you know, because of all the risks and complications, and then I went back a month later and had another consultation with him, and he was so nice and he re-explained everything, even though I was probably wasting his time. Before that second consultation, I was waiting in the waiting room to see him and talked to another lady who was there for a post-op appointment. She only had great things to say about him, just like my friend. I signed up for a date right then.

How did the surgery go? How was the post-op period? No Complications! My neck and shoulders hurt for the first day, but after that I was able to deal with the pain around my breasts. That was more or less okay after four days, and I got through them with good pain meds. I stayed at my mom's, so that was nice. She helped me out while I sat on the couch and watched TV. <name withheld> was great. He gave me his home number in case there were any problems. I was back at work in three weeks - and made sure I didn't lift suitcases for another three weeks.

Knowing what you know now, what do you think you would have done differently if you had to do it all over again? That's a tough question! My doctor was so good, and I'm so happy with the results.

Any advice for women considering breast augmentation surgery? Just the same thing they've probably heard over and over again: make sure you're doing it for yourself! That's why I got them done, and after having them done, I'm even more aware of how important that is.
